English is a pioneer of the RabbitHoles® medium. He created his first limited edition "Cathy Cowgirl" in July 2007 for Comic-Con International in San Diego, CA, and shortly thereafter released "SCION Underground #1" and "SCION Underground #2" which were designed to be the windows on his SCION Art Car at Art Basel 2007 in Miami, FL. English also experimented with printing digital video in the animated holograms with footage from the documentary film about his life and work, Popaganda: The Art and Crimes of Ron English, by Pedro Carvajal. English is currently developing several concepts for future limited edition 3D holograms.
"Cathy Cowgirl"
is one of Ron English’s signature characters and whether viewers find her to be entertaining, odd, inappropriate, or attractive, she is effective at being memorable. Through the years, many versions of Cathy have been painted and sculpted as part of English’s collection; in 2007, RabbitHoles Media had the pleasure of meeting English in Montreal, QC, which sparked the collaboration of converting Cathy into a 3D animated hologram, and launching two limited editions at Comic-Con International 2007.
Using an exisiting toy maquette of Cathy and her cow-town landmarks, RabbitHoles coordinated the 3D scanning of the statue with XYZ Imaging Inc., and then English worked closely with expert RabbitHoles artist Jon Clouter, art-directing the coloring and animation of his character in the 3D environment to convey his intended story and live-action persona for Cathy when she interacts with viewers from inside her hologram print.
"Cathy Cowgirl" by Ron English is available in two limited edition sizes: 28x40in (20,000$US, ed. of 5+3AP) /AND/ 14x20in (6,000$US, ed. of 10+3AP)
SCION Underground #1 / SCION Underground #2
In Fall 2007, Toyota/SCION invited Ron English to create a SCION Art Car that would be on display at the SEMA Auto Show in Las Vegas, NV as well as at Art Basel in Miami, FL.
